Description

Hakonechloa macra is one of the most graceful grasses you can grow in a shaded garden. Its bright green, strap-like leaves arch and cascade in flowing layers — movement and texture in a spot where most grasses simply won’t perform. Through spring and summer it holds a fresh, luminous green that lights up darker corners, and as autumn arrives the foliage shifts to warm shades of gold and bronze before dying back for winter.

It’s a clump-forming grass that builds steadily over time, never invasive, always well-behaved. Equally at home in a shaded border, a woodland-style planting scheme, or a container on a north-facing terrace. Understated, elegant, and genuinely useful in the parts of the garden that are hardest to plant.

Planting: Plant in spring or autumn into moist, humus-rich soil. Incorporate leaf mould or garden compost at planting to get it off to a good start. In containers, use a quality peat-free compost and ensure good drainage.

Position: Partial to full shade suits it best — it will tolerate some morning sun but dislikes hot, dry, exposed spots. Dappled shade under trees is ideal.

Watering: Keep well-watered through the first growing season. Once established it copes well, but it performs best in consistently moist soil — don’t let it dry out completely during dry spells.

Feeding: A light top-dressing of compost in spring is sufficient. In containers, apply a slow-release feed in spring to support healthy foliage growth.

Seasonal Care: Cut back old foliage to near ground level in late winter before new growth emerges. It responds well to this annual tidy and returns fresh each spring.

Design Notes: Works beautifully alongside hostas, ferns, astilbes, and lungworts in shaded borders. Use it at the front of a border or along the edge of a path where the arching habit can be appreciated.
