and Delivered From Caragh from week commencing 2nd November

The days shorten, the ground cools, the nursery changes pace… and a whole season of careful work becomes visible in the clearest way possible: lifting rootballed trees.
If you’ve ever wondered why we rootball trees, why this season matters so much, and what makes a Caragh-grown tree different — this is the behind-the-scenes story.
And if you’re at home watching the storm roll in, this is also your invitation to browse, ask questions, and let our team show you real images and options before you commit. Rootballed tree delivery begins w/c 2nd November, as we start lifting all this coming week.
What is a rootballed tree?
WE have had to wait patiently until now for them to be ready, a rootballed tree is a field-grown tree that’s lifted from the ground during the dormant season with its root system held in a compact “ball” of soil. That rootball is then wrapped (typically in hessian and secured) to keep it intact and protected during handling and transport.
In plain terms: it’s a way of moving a mature tree from field to garden while keeping the roots supported and stable.
Rootballing is not the “quick” option. It’s the careful option.
Why rootballs? (And why this time of year?)
1) Dormant season = less stress on the tree
When trees are dormant, they’re not pushing new leaf growth and they’re not demanding as much water through the canopy. That means the tree can cope far better with being moved.
It’s one of the biggest reasons the rootballed season is so important: you’re working with the tree’s natural rhythm.
2) Field-grown strength, structure and character
Field-grown trees develop differently to container-grown trees. Over years, they build a strong framework, a natural shape, and a presence that’s hard to replicate quickly.
Rootballing lets you bring that maturity into a garden in one moment — instant structure, instant scale, instant impact.
3) The rootball protects what matters most
The roots are the lifeline. Rootballing keeps a concentrated, protected mass of roots and soil together so the tree can transition into its new home with the best possible chance of success.
The part people don’t see – years of growing, shaping and care
A rootballed tree isn’t something you “get in” for a season. It’s something you commit to for years.
At Caragh, many of the trees we lift have been grown and tended here for a long time — with repeated cycles of
- Careful planting and spacing
- Seasonal feeding and watering
- Pruning and shaping for strong structure
- Monitoring for pests and stress
- Staking and stability work when needed
- Ongoing observation — walking the nursery, checking growth, checking health, checking form
And then, when the time is right, we lift them, this is the bit we usually show you.
That moment looks like a single action — but it’s the final step in a long relationship between the grower and the tree.
There’s a lot of pride in that.
Because when you buy a rootballed tree, you’re not just buying a product. You’re taking home the result of years of patience and expertise.

Why Caragh for rootballed trees?
There are plenty of places to buy trees. Rootballed trees, especially.
But here’s what we believe makes Caragh different and why customers come back to us for the big, important purchases.
1) You’re buying with guidance, not guesswork
Rootballed trees are a meaningful investment. The right choice depends on your site, soil, exposure, and what you want the tree to do in your garden (privacy, structure, shade, screening, seasonal interest).
Our team will talk it through with you properly — and we’ll show you real images of the actual options, even while you’re at home watching the weather outside.

2) Mature stock, chosen for real gardens
We specialise in trees that change a garden quickly: mature, specimen, and impactful stock that gives you structure and presence from day one.
3) We care about the outcome, not just the order
We want your tree to thrive. That means honest advice on:
- What will and won’t work in your conditions
- Planting and staking
- Watering (especially in the first year)
- Aftercare and seasonal expectations
A rootballed tree can be one of the best things you ever do for your garden — but only if it’s chosen and planted properly.
What happens during lifting week (and why it matters)
We begin lifting this coming week, and it’s one of the most important weeks in the nursery calendar.
Lifting is careful, skilled work. The goal is simple: keep the rootball intact, protect the roots, and handle the tree in a way that sets it up for success.
This is also why we encourage customers to get in touch early. Rootballed season is seasonal by nature — and the best trees tend to be the ones people move quickly on.
Delivery & timing
- Lifting starts: this coming week
- Rootballed tree delivery begins: w/c 2nd November
If you’re planning a project, or you want to secure a particular tree, now is the time to start the conversation. Even if you’re not ready to plant immediately, we can advise on timing and what makes sense for your garden.
How to choose the right rootballed tree
When you message or call, it helps to have:
- A few photos of the area (and the wider garden if possible)
- Rough measurements (even pacing it out is fine)
- Your location (for delivery planning)
- What you want the tree to achieve (privacy, shade, screening, structure, avenue, focal point)
- Any site challenges (wind exposure, wet ground, heavy clay, coastal conditions)
From there, we can show you options, share images, and guide you toward the best fit.
A final word (from us)
Rootballed season is one of the times of year we feel most proud of what we do.
It’s when the years of work become real, when the trees we’ve grown, shaped and cared for here in Caragh are ready to go out into new gardens and become part of someone else’s story.
If you’d like help choosing, just get in touch. We’ll show you what’s available, share images, and help you pick the right tree with confidence.
Delivery starts w/c 2nd November. Lifting begins this coming week.
