Description

The flowers of Chinese wisteria open in early summer, arising from bare stems as the foliage does not appear until the flowers are over. It can be grown traditionally on the wall of a large house, with wall nails used to hold the framework of main stems in place, or allowed to scramble through a big tree where it looks most spectacular.    These get a beautiful contorted stem with beautiful blue-lavender flowers in huge drapes of colour – stunning in late Spring to Early Summer.

Chinese Blue Wisteria needs to be pruned twice a year – in July or August and then again in January or February. In summer, after flowering, prune the green shoots from the previous year’s growth. This encourages flower production and helps to control the overall size. In January, remove up to half of the previous year’s growth, leaving just a few buds on each stem.
