Tsuga canadensis is a vigorous, broadly conical evergreen tree that grows up to 25m tall. It’s bark is smooth and brown at first, later maturing to blackish brown with deep grooves. Dark green, needle-like leaves, that are white underneath, are borne in two ranks on slender shoots forming flat sprays of foliage. Oval brown cones approximately 2cm long ripen in autumn. This tree tolerates pruning and can be used as a hedge plant.
